Before getting pregnant with my son, Miles, I thought I had a deep understanding of e-commerce and marketing. I was working for one of the most successful start-ups in the country and had a background in merchandising and advertising. How could any industry fool me into buying things I didn’t need? I felt above the “shopping” law. Untouchable by email promotions, Instagram influencers, and transit ads, but boy was I wrong!
The maternity and baby industry is a confusing place, filled with mom bloggers, micro influencers and so much content it made my head spin. Every mom I spoke to recommended different products which only further confused the situation. I had so much to do to prepare for baby, the amount of research required just to build my registry was daunting. And that was just the pre-birth phase! Once we brought Miles home to our Manhattan apartment, new needs came into focus, and in many cases I ended up re-evaluating the “stuff” I had so carefully chosen. It was exhausting.
Not to be outsmarted by the baby industry, I took to all things baby with the same gusto I once reserved for scouring the internet for the best off-season promotions. Friends and family started coming to me for advice as they prepped for their own new arrivals - the research I’d already done could save them hours of headaches trying to sort the mess out on their own. And, just like that, Prepping for Peanut was born!
